SoWa Sundays

About a week ago, a friend of ours told us about a market in the South End in Boston called SoWa. Short for South of Washington street (it's location in Boston), the SoWa Open Market  has tons of vendors selling fresh produce, artisan breads, baked goods, exotic teas, jewelry, furniture, art, clothing, and vintage items. It was so fascinating to see all of the creativity, craftsmanship, and history throughout the market. We definitely suggest checking out SoWa Sundays in Boston's South End.

Here are all the facts to make sure that you get the most out of SoWa!
~ Est. in 2003
~ Open from 10am-4pm every Sunday from May 6th to October 28th
~ Parking is available nearby
~ Located on Harrison Ave in Boston
~ Food and Drinks sold
~ New artisans featured each week

We hit the jackpot when we went to SoWa! Our haul included: 2 dresses (1 vintage!), 1 scarf, 1 blouse, a 1958 book of Renoir paintings (yay vintage!), and a red velvet cupcake that was to die for!

Here are a couple of our photos from SoWa!

The Fashion Truck! This mobile boutique is adorable! Find out more here!

 Loved everything on these racks!

Drop Everything And Read!

Happy Hump Day!

With the start of school just around the corner, many of you may be starting to "hit the books" again. If you are looking for a great trilogy, you definitely have to check out The Hunger Games series by Suzanne Collins. This New York Times best selling author has outdone herself with these books.  If you have not already jumped onto the Hunger Games bandwagon, you definitely should. These books are filled with extraordinary detail, thrilling action, and a love story that will keep you hooked.

Original LotYaC Photo

The first book in the trilogy was made into a box office hit earlier this year and production for the second movie will start soon. The Hunger Games movie was just released on DVD on August 18th and Young and Chic was all over that. The movie was phenomenal. It was an accurate interpretation of the book while still presenting an action-packed film. The star-studded cast showed off their talents and really embraced the uniqueness of each of their characters. We are very excited for the release of the second (and third) movies and we would love to hear your thoughts about the Hunger Games craze! Share your thoughts with us on Facebook and twitter or leave us a comment below!

Bring on the Bedazzling!

With the Autumn season quickly approaching, we at Lifestyles of the Young and Chic have been seeking some serious inspiration. One of our favorite places to discover the newest trends, reintroduce ourselves to the classics, and meet new fashion friends is Pinterest. This website has everything, including a huge fashion inventory. One thing that we have seen a lot of recently is embellishment! Whether it be subtle or explosive; beading, enamel, color, crystals, and jewels are making a may-jor statement this season. Here are a some of our favorite on-trend pins.

                          1                                                                                  2

1. How AH-Mazing are these leggings?! They are so chic. The detail is brilliant. photo
2. The bodice of this dress is spectacularly designed. The mix of colors and directions of the embellishment creates a feminine silhouette and some serious visual interest. photo

                                                   3

 3. We love the sequins on this bodice. They are very cleverly placed to create the shape of this top. photo
                                4                                                                                      5

4&5. These jackets are stunning. They look like works of art. The great thing about both of these pieces is that even though there is intricate detail on them, they are still very wearable if the rest of the outfit is kept simple. 4. photo 5. photo

Add embellishment to your everyday wardrobe.

6                                                                                          7
                                                   8

6. Lauren Conrad's Fall 2012 Kohl's line has hit stores and we are thrilled! This blouse incorporates all the best that Fall 2012 has to offer. Its mix of this jewel tone blue and black is very popular right now and so is the embellishment that it has on the sleeve. This is a great way to incorporate detailed beading into an everyday look. photo
7. A skirt with boots is an essential fall outfit. But why not take it one step further and add sequins to that skirt? This chic lady dons a sparkly skirt with a cardigan and boots. We love the mix of the masculine and feminine pieces. photo
8. This is another one of our current obsessions. Statement necklaces are HUGE right now. They have hit the scene and are here for fall. This piece has all of the elements of the embellished clothing, but constructed into an accessory. We are also major fans of Stella & Dot and this Bamboleo necklacephoto

We are dying to see how you will wear the embellishment trend this season. Share your photos with us on Facebook, twitter, and Pinterest: #youngandchic!

Manic-ure Monday: Geranium

If you are like us, then you feel absolutely naked when you do not have a pop of polish on your nails. If you are looking to dress up your nude nails, then you have come to the perfect place! Our current nail fav is Essie's #38 Geranium. This red-orange hue is a bright compliment to any summer outfit. However, it is also a great transition color because it can work into the early Autumn season. This makes Geranium the perfect addition to your polish collection.

1. Notice the orange tones in this red color. The subtle warmth of the color  makes it great for Fall.

 2. Essie #38 Geranium

3. Don't forget your top coat! We used Rimmel London's Base Coat/Top Coat Pro.
("Get the London Look")

Animal Instinct

Today's FASHION FIXATION du jour is animal print!! When adding some animal print to an outfit there can be a fine line between trendy and trashy! Cheetah or leopard, which is our personal favorite or even zebra or snakeskin can be super chic in moderation!! Our recommendation is to add a print as an accent instead of basing an entire outfit around it.  A cute printed shoe or sweater can be the perfect addition to a look.

2. Here's another cute way to incorporate a little leopard into an outfit.  High waisted printed shorts with a plain blouse is so chic!!

3. An animal printed clutch is the perfect way to add a print to a look.

How do you wear your leopard??  Let us know on Twitter or Facebook !!!

Let the Games Begin!

As we blog, the Opening Ceremonies of the 2012 Olympic Games have begun in London, England!

We are huge fans of both the Olympic Games and the city of London. It has felt like an eternity waiting for the games to begin but we are so excited and happy that the time has arrived. We are going to be glued to our televisions, absorbing every moment of the Olympics.

Photo: Google, http://aiesec.ca/uploads/edmonton/England_flag.jpg

So far, we have adored every moment of the Olympics. There have been wonderful performances and healthy doses of humor. Of course, we have to talk about the Queen. Her entrance with Bond, James Bond was phenomenal. We absolutely loved her pink dress, accessorized with her signature purse. It was also lovely to see William, Kate, and Harry enjoying the Opening Ceremonies and taking pride in Great Britain's National Anthem.

Are you watching the 2012 Olympics? What do you think of them so far? Any events that you are especially excited for? We want to know so tweet us, post on our Facebook wall, or leave us a comment. Happy watching!

The Brush Up

Alright Ladies, we want you to think long and hard about the following question: How long has it been since you last cleaned your makeup brushes? Whether it was a day ago, a week ago, or (uh-oh) a month or more ago, we have a step-by-step tutorial on how to take your brushes from filthy to flawless!

Here we go!
You will need 6 things:
1. Your brushes (our FAVORITE brushes can be found here)
2. A glass plate
3. Paper towels
4. Dish Soap
5. Olive Oil
6. Water
1. On the plate, combine equal parts soap and olive oil
2. Add about a teaspoon of room temperature water to the mix as well

3. Take your brush and swirl it around throughout all of the ingredients. As the makeup releases from the bristles, the mixture will become cloudy. (Don't worry, you can clean many brushes even when it is cloudy)

4. After all of the makeup is out of the brush and on the plate, run the brush under warm water and rub the bristles until the water runs clear.

 5. Finally, lay the brushes on paper towels and allow them to dry for a couple of hours. Once they have completely dried, you are ready to use them again!

6. Remember, your brushes need to be cleaned every 2-4 weeks. It will improve the health of your skin and increase the life of your makeup and your brushes if you follow this schedule!

We tried this on all of our brushes and we were thrilled with the results! If you decided to try this Style Solution and found it to be successful, let us know on Facebook, twitter, or in the comments section below!

Manicure Monday: Neon Nails

The first day of summer welcomes backyard barbecues, daisy dukes, flip flops, and (for LotYaC) the perfect time to break out bright nail colors! One of our favorite summer colors is a part of China Glaze's neon collection. Shocking Pink Neon is a bright neon pink. It is feminine, girly, and is sure to enhance a tan. Bright colors are very popular this season and wearing a pop of neon on your nails is the perfect way to try out the trend!

Too Much Fun in the Sun

After a crazy busy week, heading to the beach on a Saturday could be the best activity to unwind and enjoy the beautiful summer weather. Perhaps, though, you spent a little too much time out in the sun and are now looking at a very red and sunburned face staring back at you in the mirror. Uh-Oh! One of our readers had a friend experience this exact problem this weekend, but with a bit of a twist. Take a look at this Facebook post from LotYaC reader, Patrick to Y&C blogger, Lyndsey. Today's Style Solution will help you find the best remedies for a sunburned, raccoon-face nightmare.

Like Lyndsey suggested, it is important to make sure the sunburn is moisturized with a mild lotion. Aloe should be a key ingredient in this step, unless you choose to use a sunburn reducer that is 100% aloe. Also, a very important beauty secret that should be kept in your arsenal is that green pigments reduce facial redness. Using products such as Eucerin Redness Relief Daily Perfecting Lotion with SPF 15 or Physician's Formula Powder Finish Concealer Stick with SPF 15 (green), both with the important SPF 15, will help to make the redness disappear.

However, avoiding the sunburn is the absolute best plan of action. When out in the sun, be sure to apply, and reapply sunblock with an SPF 15 or higher especially during midday when the sun is at its peak (10am-4pm). Also, be sure to wear sunglasses that provide UV Ray protection to keep eyes from sun damage. For more Summer Sun facts, check out WebMD.

Do you have any embarrassing sunburn stories? How about any good skin protection secrets? Share them with us on Facebook or Tweet us anytime! We WANT to hear from you!

We want to thank Patrick, one of our favorite readers, for sending us this question!

Commuting: the Young and Chic Way

Do you work out of town and have to commute into and home from work each day?  Do you dread the hour long rides in a, let's just say, less than glamorous setting?? Well fear not!!  In today's Whatever Wednesday we have some flawless and fabulous tips to make your journey a bit more endurable.

First thing's first: DO NOT FORGET HEADPHONES!!! Most of the time at 8:00 in the morning drowning out the conversations of the people around you is crucial.  (hint: keep an extra pair of headphones in your purse so you never have to worry about running out without them!)

Next, make sure before you set out for the day to have some killer playlists to put you in a good mood for the start of your day.  Make sure it's upbeat music to start your day on a positive note!! (yes, pun completely intended)
Photo: Property of LotYaC
1. Y&C blogger Jenn is going through a bit of a country phase this summer as you can see by this playlist entitled "Country Summer Songs Part II" (yes, there is a Part I and a Part III coming very soon! ;) ) And no country summer playlist would be complete without a little Luke Bryan, Pistol Annies, and of course Carrie Underwood!!

Photo: Property of LotYaC
2. Here is a bit of a playlist from Y&C blogger Lyndsey! This is an awesome playlist that brings together great new songs with some oldies-but-goodies!!

If the music just isn't enough to make the minutes go by on your way to work another great distraction is to buy a funny summer beach read on your e-reader or even your phone!!
Photo: Property of LotYaC
3. One amazing summer read we DEFINITELY recommend is Andy Cohen's Most Talkative.  This book is a hilarious telling of great anecdotes from his life!!  It is a must-read and will instantly make you forget you're on your morning commute.

Do you have any more tips to help pass the time during your way into work or some great playlists?? Let us know on Twitter or Facebook !!! And while you're there please don't forget to follow us and like us!!
